Intro:
Elon Musk has revealed an audacious new plan: to build an AI supercomputer with 50 million H100 GPUs over five years — a compute scale 250× larger than today’s most powerful clusters.
The Details:
At $20,000 per GPU, the hardware alone will cost $1 trillion, with total infrastructure pushing the bill to over $2 trillion, rivaling global military budgets.
The project, known as Colossus 2, follows the initial success of Colossus 1, which now runs on 200,000 H100s and trained Grok 3 and 4.
The first phase includes 550,000 GB200/GB300 chips, powered by Tesla Megapacks and custom liquid cooling, with over 200 Megapacks already in deployment.
Musk says Colossus 2 is designed to support next-gen models including coding agents, multimodal AI, video generation, and emotionally responsive AI like Ani.
